A Message from Your President

J_Sellars-296x296

Hello IFFF ,

As the holidays have now passed, we begin to focus back on work and our day to day lives that we have all become accustomed to. The hope is that as we have had the chance to focus on family and friends over the last few weeks, and that we have made our bond with those who are near and dear to our hearts a little bit stronger, and a little more memorable. The holidays give us a chance to allow time to slow down for a bit so that we can take it all in and appreciate the things that are more important to us than material possessions.

I didn't get to spend as much time fishing this last month as I would have liked to, but hey, when do any of us ever get to spend as much time on the water as we want. I love getting to be out on the river in winter months with a thermos of hot coffee, a freshly packed pipe in my mouth and the abundance of bald eagles and wildlife that seem to grace our water sources as if they don't even know we are there. And since the can-can line of fisherman that are usually present around Spring, Summer and Fall don't seem to be as much of a presence at the river, I don't have to get up at stupid o'clock to be in my favorite fishing spots when the sun meets the horizon.

I also like to spend this time of year tying up my supply of flies for the upcoming Spring and Summer months in order to get prepared for the various hatches that are about to greet us out on the river with my favorite being the caddis hatch. Those of you who read my letter last month might remember that I caught my very first trout on a caddis fly and it has since become one of my favorite flies to watch floating down the surface of the water waiting for that monster brownie to sip it off the top.

But much like the holidays, fly fishing has taught me some of the same principles that we all try to achieve in our own lives. Slow down, try to take it all in, and appreciate the moments we have when we cast aside our routine of the daily grind that eats our souls and take a long hard look at what we have. Because one day, it might all be gone.

John Sellars
President OKTU and TFF

Dues Are Due

Tulsa Fly Fisher dues are established on an annual basis.  Your $15 (or $25 sustaining member) helps pay for our speakers throughout the year.  Cash or check at the general meetings is the easiest way to pay.  Or send you check to: TFF, PO Box 54108, Tulsa OK 74155.

Fly Fishing 101

Some of you have mentioned that you want to learn flyfishing or to be a better fly caster.  OKTU and TFF will put on a fly fishing clinic via the Jenks Community Education program ... it's coming up on February 28th.  You can sign up by clicking on this link.

You should be able to sign up for it on their web site now.  Cost is $15, it lasts all day ... 10:30 to 3:30 with an hour lunch.  We'll spend the morning talking about where to fish for "any fish" in OK using a fly rod, why fish hang out where they do, and more.  You'll learn a lot of the fly fishing language ... fly line weights (wt), reels, rods and what wt rod/line to use for different fish.

After lunch we have a casting clinic in the Jenks Aquatic Center ... ON WATER ... inside where it's warm on the Olympic size swimming pool ... no fish, but you get to learn how it "feels" to cast on water.  We'll have a group of experienced fly casters there to help you learn the simplest casting techniques.

I promise, you'll come away from the clinic with a ton of confidence and a lot of knowledge.  We supply everything ... but you can bring your own fly rod if you have one.  There is also time set aside to learn knot tying skills and to see a couple of our best fly tyers at work.  Class is limited to 30.

General Meeting

Scott Hood presents:

TOP TO BOTTOM - THE 10 BEST SPOTS TO FISH ON THE LOWER ILLINOIS AND HOW OTHERS (BESIDES ME) FISH THEM!

This month’s meeting of the Oklahoma Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Tulsa Fly Fishers will be held Thursday,January  8th.  We will meet at Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St. on the north side of the Creek Turnpike off Memorial Drive.  Doors open around 6:00 with the meeting starting at 6:30.  Come early and say hello.

Due to a sudden illness our planed-for speaker had to cancel, but our own Scott Hood has agreed to fill his slot.  He has revamped his previous presentation to include topics frequently asked on our Facebook pages.

Scott Hood, with the aid of a number of the people he considers to be "some of the best anglers he knows that fish the Lower Illinois" will present, 10 best spots on the lower Illinois, his favorites and theirs, along with what each feels is the best fly for that particular spot on the lower Illinois.

Plus, he will offer a review of the following "big questions" raised on the Oklahoma Trout Unlimited and Tulsa Fly Fishers Facebook page.  Items he will attempt to cover are: generation schedules ... fishing rising and falling water ... fly selections and changing flies ... strike or no strike indicators ... leader and tippet sizing.

If you fish the LIR, you won't want to miss this discussion.

Did You Know?

By: Scott Hood

Members, we received this letter from Jim Burroughs of the ODWC. We are publishing it mainly for those who want to know what good comes about from being a member of Trout Unlimited.
Scott Hood

Good Morning,
I wanted to give you a brief update on things. I appreciate all of Trout Unlimited’s support at all levels. You all make this job easier and ODWC is always thankful, but more than that, I am.

Both the SDOX and Bypass in operation

SDOX in Operation

This summer we used the continuous DO probes (that we were able to purchase through the generous donation by Trout Unlimited) to collect data on varying release scenarios. We ran 7 or 8 different scenarios using the bypass, SDOX, release, no release and combinations of all.  I have downloaded all the data from the entire summer and have edited for erroneous data that is sometimes collected during times of calibration etc. I have compiled thousands of lines of data into a file that can be read with a data analysis software package called SAS that is often used by universities to analyze large data sets. OSU is going to try to assist with the analysis, assuming other unforeseen things don’t come up that require more of their time.  Dr. Shannon Brewer, the assistant unit leader at OSU has been nice enough to volunteer their time and expertise with this. Since they are volunteering their time, we are on their schedule so it will likely take a while to get the results.

Going forward we will collect similar data next year especially since the parts are in to make bypass repairs designed to allow the bypass to be operated at or near full original design specifications which should then allow for a higher cfs to be released in the stream. We are excited about these repairs and hope the improvements will benefit downstream water quality while conserving water over our historical release options. Additional testing will have to be conducted to measure any resulting benefits.

By-pass pipe

Valve to be repaired

On another note, those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting Brandon Brown that works with me will be a disappointed to know that he has been promoted to the supervisor of our paddlefish center in Miami. He is a great supporter of streams and a knowledgeable hardworking guy. His shoes will be hard to fill but we wish him well.

Thanks for your continued support.
