The Federation of Fly Fishers' Fishing Instructor's Handbook is a powerful and unique "teaching tool". It has been designed to facilitate two key issues: First, the ability of the instructor to prepare quickly and effectively for any given topic; and, second, the ability of the student to take organized notes which will thereafter serve as a meaningful reference to help avoid that "after the class diminishing recollection". This is a tool to help instructors prepare for teaching. It is not a tool to help instructors prepare for the CI Test.
The materials in the Handbook are based in large part upon the Fly Fishing Pocket Guide series created by Ron Cordes, former chairman of the Board of the FFF, and co-authored with Gary LaFontaine. These 10 volumes include Knots, Fly Casting, Fly Tying, Food Sources for Trout, Dry Fly Fishing, Nymph Fishing, Lake Fly Fishing, Fly Fishing for Bass, Fly Fishing for Steelhead, and Saltwater Fly Fishing.
Because these materials are presented as separate modules on a disk, the instructor can print out copies of the specific topic of interest for each student and one for his or her self. Each page is designed with an area dedicated to notes. The instructor can readily and neatly make notes on his or her copy to supplement the printed materials, and the students can each make notes on their copies as the class proceeds. One particular significance of this approach is that each student leaves the class with a "reference tool" that will help the student better retain what she or he has learned.
